Why Count Characters?

Common Character Limits

  • Characters (no spaces) — Character count excluding all whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines).
  • Words — Number of words, defined as sequences of non-whitespace characters separated by whitespace.
  • Sentences — Number of sentences, detected by counting sentence-ending punctuation marks (. ! ?).
  • Lines — Number of lines, counted by line breaks in the text.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, spaces are characters. Our tool shows both the total character count (including spaces) and the count without spaces, so you can use whichever metric your platform requires.

How are words counted?

Words are counted as sequences of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or newlines. Hyphenated words (like “well-known”) count as a single word. Numbers and special characters surrounded by spaces also count as words.
